The Christmas plants

There are many Australian native plants in bloom at Christmas time. A number of them have been called “Christmas plants in various parts of the country, including Christmas bells, Christmas bush and Christmas orchid.

When the first Europeans arrived in Australia, they were happy they could get similar bell wildflowers and green leaves covered in bright red or white flowers used as Christmas decorations. It was a great  earth eternal gold contrast with the bare trees and dormant gardens they had left in Europe.

Christmas in Australia comes at the beginning of summer and many people no longer serve a traditional roast dinner warm. Cold turkey and ham, fish and salads are often served instead. It has even become socially acceptable, serving plum pudding traditional Christmas with cold cream, cream or ice cream. Pavlova, a meringue base topped with whipped cream and fresh fruits and different versions of the pudding festive ice cream desserts have also become popular for Christmas.

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization Coles and businesses are on a project to cultivate native foods concerned. They work to develop with Mandawuy Yunupingu and indigenous communities in sufficient quantities for sale in supermarkets across Australia.
