Preventing Diabetes: nothing beats a diet!
Preventing Diabetes: nothing beats a diet! The type 2 diabetes, largely linked to obesity is increasing lightning in industrialized countries. A recent study published in The Lancet shows that a change in lifestyle (diet and exercise), associated with weight loss even if modest, is currently the best method to prevent the disease effectively.
A regime against diabetes
The Lancet recently published the results of the longest and largest study in the field of prevention of diabetes in the United States, where 1 in 10 people suffers from this disease. Conducted in 3000 subjects at high risk of diabetes, this study initiated 10 years ago, has drawn a comparison between three groups of patients. The first group was encouraged to practice 5 times 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per week and to adopt a diet with a goal of losing 7% of their initial weight after one year. The second group received a drug, metformin, while the third group received no special intervention.
A benefit against diabetes since lost some kilos
After a year, most patients with diabetes in the first group had achieved their goal of losing weight, an average loss of 6.8 kilos, thus decreasing their risk of diabetes. Among these people, it was shown that even those who have taken an average of 4.5 pounds over the next 7 years, have retained a risk of diabetes lower. The study teaches us that the benefits of weight loss, even modest, persist for several years. There are no small profits!
